19 Weeks-- ALMOST Halfway There!

I can’t believe week 19 is almost halfway over! Whereas time was almost at a standstill during my first trimester (and really, until about week 16), time seems to have started flying by ever since we bought the house. I attribute it to the fact that I am feeling so much better, and I am actually being productive with my time. Days don’t go by at a snail’s pace when you’re not laying on the couch sleeping and motionless!

So, here’s the latest:

We registered a week ago Saturday, which was a HUGE check off of our Baby To Do List—and if you know me, you know how much I LOVE my lists, and how much MORE I love checking things off of them J. It was a loooong and daunting day! First of all, I was not prepared for the feeling of utter inadequacy once the Registry Consultant placed that little scanner gun in my hand and waved me off with a big smile and a “have fun!” How is this supposed to be fun again? And, how am I supposed to pick things out for someone I’ve never even had the pleasure of meeting?!? I have no idea if this baby wants Pampers or Huggies, Desitin or Butt Paste, Avent or Dr. Brown bottles… how am I supposed to choose!?! Thank the Lord for my mom and my sister. My mom brought me back to my senses and reminded to think rationally, and my sister had sent me off with the best “Baby Registry Check-List” anyone could ever dream of having. So, I gathered my thoughts, stuck to my check-list, and away we went. Once I got into a groove, it became fun, and a little emotional. Registering for a wedding is fun and selfish, in a way. Registering for a baby is a reminder that now you make decisions for an innocent and precious little being that you are undeservingly blessed with.

After registering, my mom and stopped by to check out the Saleboat, a twice yearly consignment sale offering baby and children’s goods. It is a good thing that we had just registered too, because I would have definitely walked out of there with just about everything this child will need. They will have their next sale in the spring, which I am excited about because by then the baby will be here and I can have fun buying things he/she needs; plus, I can’t wait to get my hands on some of the adorable, handmade smocked outfits I saw there! The rest of the day was spent walking through IKEA, West Elm, and Target, looking at stuff for our house J. Denny spent that weekend painting our Master Bedroom and Bathroom, and it was my duty to start looking for curtains, rugs, etc. Talk about another daunting task!

As if the day hadn’t been eventful enough already, once I got home I got to order our bedding for the nursery! I think I am most excited about designing and decorating the nursery, because we’re not going to do a “baby” room per se… no butterflies or flowers, or elephants or tacky color combinations (well, hopefully that last one turns out to be true…). I had finally decided on a color theme earlier in the week, and found the fabric I wanted a couple of days prior. After chatting back and forth with IslaCorrine on ETSY, I had to act fast in order to take advantage of her anniversary sale. So that evening, my mom and I sat down at the computer to try to figure out the right fabric combination for our 3-piece bedding set. I’m really pleased with the combination we decided on, and I can’t wait to see it come together. I’ll probably dedicate a post to how the nursery comes together, so I will leave out any previews or pictures until then.

The ABSOLUTE highlight of the day came around 11:30pm that evening (I told you it was a HUGE day for us!). We were watching Saturday Night Live; I was laying on the floor, and Denny had gotten up to get a drink from the kitchen. All of a sudden, I felt the weirdest little sensation just to the right of my bellybutton; and I couldn’t help but giggle because I immediately knew exactly what it was! Our baby is now big and strong enough to say “hi” J. Most of the books I’ve read and the women who I’ve talked to say these movements feel like gas bubbles. To me, it felt like the kind of gas bubbles you feel when you’re starving, except it was unmistakable that it was the baby and not hunger pains. I felt him/her again about a minute later, and I couldn’t help but laugh and cry for the next 5 minutes. It wasn’t like a hysterical cry, but the tears just welled up out of nowhere and kept flowing as I laughed, marveling at the fact that my child was making his/her presence known J. Sunday I felt more of the same, and we placed Denny’s hand on my belly because I swore I could feel the movement from the outside, but it’s still too early. Soon though!

The rest of the week went by very smoothly. We are staying busy with getting the house move-in ready; cleaning, painting, etc. I had a short dance rehearsal on Wednesday and it was so funny because as soon as the music stopped, the baby would start moving as if asking for more J.

Baby Stats—Mango
  • Baby is about 6 inches long and weighs approximately 8.5 ounces!
  • Baby is developing a protective covering called the vernix caseosa. It is greasy, and white, and it is what will prevent him/her from looking like a raisin at birth.
  • Baby is working on his/hers 5 senses! Nerve cells for sense of taste, hearing, sight, and smell are developing in the brain.
Cravings: Nothing new. Still gulping down the cranberry juice, and holding off on the bagels. I’m also back to snacking on cliff bars (I had developed a mild aversion to them since our sailing trip), and I've had a salad with dinner 2 nights in a row!!

Baby Bump: More and more people have started telling me that I am finally showing. The coolest things ever? I feel the baby moving all the time! It's my absolute favorite! I even went to bed early last night because I wanted a few minutes alone, just me and the baby. It's just the best.

Other Changes: I dyed my hair a darker shade of brown, in hopes of making peace with the fact that my hair and my hormones are at war with each other. I really like the new shade, but my hair is still on strike. I’ve also experienced 2 middle of the night charlie horses (?), but those aren’t completely foreign to me, and I’ve trained myself to stay calm and breathe through them, and Denny is none the wiser in the morning. One thing that hasn’t changed so far, or at least not significantly, is my dancing capability. Thank the Lord for that (since it is my therapy and all…)!
